The Cinema Sanctum

An Experience in Attention

Every meaningful act begins by asking for attention.

A teacher depends upon it.

A leader receives it.

An architect shapes it.

A scientist discovers through it.

An artist invites it.

Yet we seldom pause to consider the responsibility that follows.

What do we do with the attention entrusted to us?

The Cinema Sanctum is an independent cultural institution devoted to exploring that question.

We believe that certain works of art possess a remarkable quality. They continue inviting our attention long after the encounter has formally ended. They continue rewarding return with fresh discovery. They continue revealing relationships that were always present, yet previously unnoticed.

Rather than asking only what these works mean, The Cinema Sanctum asks different questions.

How do they invite our attention?

To what do they continue inviting it?

What do they do with the attention we give them?

These questions lead naturally beyond cinema itself.

They illuminate the nature of creation, design, education, leadership and every human endeavour in which another person's attention is received.

The Cinema Sanctum creates carefully prepared encounters with some of the world's most enduring works of cinema, not simply to deepen our understanding of film, but to explore one of the most fundamental capacities of human experience.

Cinema is our medium.

Attention is our subject.
